Top Young Skilled Singaporeans Set To Shine At WorldSkills Asean 2018 Competition

Singapore will be sending 40 highly skilled youths from the polytechnics and ITE to compete in 20 skills areas at the upcoming 12th WorldSkills ASEAN 2018 Competition in Bangkok, Thailand from 31 August to 2 September 2018.

This is the largest contingent that Singapore has sent to the WorldSkills ASEAN Competition, since we first participated in it in 2008. The list of competitors of WorldSkills ASEAN 2018 Competition is in Annex A.

Team Singapore will compete in 20 of the 26 skills areas at the 12th WorldSkills ASEAN 2018, the largest number of skills areas we participated in to-date. Of these, Fashion Technology and Internet-of-Things are two new areas in which we will be competing in for the first time, with the latter being a new competition skills area introduced at this year’s WorldSkills ASEAN Competition. Please refer to Annex B for more information on Singapore’s participation in previous WorldSkills ASEAN Competitions.

At the Sending-off Ceremony for Team Singapore held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic today, Mr Ng Cher Pong, Chairman of WorldSkills Singapore Council and Chief Executive of SkillsFuture Singapore, handed the Singapore Flag to team captains Mr Merick Fong Tzin Chen (Electronics) and Miss Shauna Tan Shi-Yu (Information Network Cabling), marking the start of the Team Singapore’s journey towards Bangkok.

Mr Ng said, “Internationally, skills are becoming a key economic driver and advantage. It is imperative that we encourage and support skills mastery from a young age. WorldSkills ASEAN 2018 Competition is a wonderful platform for us to celebrate the skills of our youth, as well as to enable them to learn and benchmark themselves against their peers regionally. They have prepared hard for the competition. I am confident that Team Singapore will give their best and do Singapore proud in Bangkok.”

Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education & Ministry of Manpower, will join the delegation to support our young competitors. The results for WorldSkills ASEAN 2018 Competition will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on 4 September 2018.
