Largest Contingent to Represent Singapore at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia

32 youths set to fly the Singapore flag high at the world’s largest skills competition

Singapore will field a team of 32 highly skilled youths from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), the five polytechnics and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to compete at the upcoming 45th WorldSkills Competition (WSC) in Kazan, Russia from 22 to 27 August 2019.

This is the largest contingent to represent Singapore since its first participation in WSC in 1995. It is also the first time Singapore is fielding a competitor from an Autonomous University – NTU. The WSC Kazan 2019 will receive more than 1,300 competitors from 69 countries competing in 56 skills areas. The list of Team Singapore competitors is in Annex A. 

This year, Team Singapore will compete in 29 skills areas, which include 6 new areas – (1) Cyber Security, (2) Chemical Laboratory Technology, (3) Cloud Computing, (4) Fashion Technology, (5) Hotel Reception, and (6) Water Technology. In particular, Cyber Security is newly introduced into WSC based on a joint proposal submitted by Singapore and the United States. Singapore will also participate in the Future Skills Competition, which will be held in conjunction with the WSC. The Future Skills competition is a competition of emerging skills that are in demand for the digital economy. Singapore will field three competitors in two Future Skills areas – Building Information Modelling Technology and Drone Operating. The list of competitors for the Future Skills competition is in Annex C. 

The Sending-off Ceremony was held at ITE Headquarters today, where the Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung, handed the Singapore flag to the Team Captains – Mr Aquila Ng (Mobile Robotics) and Ms Shauna Tan (Information Network Cabling) – in support of our competitors who will be representing Singapore in Kazan. 

Mr Ng Cher Pong, Chairman of WorldSkills Singapore Council and Chief Executive of SkillsFuture Singapore, said, “The pursuit of skills is a lifelong journey which starts from young. The WorldSkills Competition plays an important role in inspiring our youths to strive towards achieving skills mastery. All our competitors have put in a lot of effort into their preparations for the competition. We look forward to seeing them do well on the global stage.”
