ITE Offers New Apprenticeship-Based Work-Learn Technical Diplomas

To build on ITE’s core strength where students learn by doing, ITE will be offering four new Work-Learn Technical Diploma (WLTD) Programmes, starting from April 2018. These new programmes will be offered in collaboration with employers in Singapore. They are:

Similar to the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programmes, the new WLTD programmes are developed and delivered in close partnership with key employers.  Learning takes place both at the workplace and on campus, with 70 per cent of the curriculum time dedicated to On-the-Job Training. These new Technical Diplomas will be awarded by ITE.

The WLTD progammes last between 2.5 and 3 years. Up to 120 places across the four programmes will be offered for the first intake. As a start, employers such as Certis CISCO, ST Electronics, Keppel Offshore & Marine, Sembcorp Marine Ltd, St Luke’s Eldercare and AWWA have committed to providing training places for the WLTD programmes, and ITE looks forward to more companies coming onboard. With the new WLTDs, ITE graduates can look forward to career progression opportunities after completion of the programmes.

"The WLTDs will provide an additional pathway for skills upgrading and career progression for ITE graduates. With most of the skills learnt through actual learning and practise in industry, we will develop a new generation of skilled workforce which truly understands the job requirements of industry. ITE looks forward to working with this pioneer group of progressive employers which is committed to creating on-the-job training opportunities and investing in developing their employees," said Ms Low Khah Gek, CEO, ITE. Participating employers and ITE’s fresh graduates have also welcomed the new programme. Their quotes are listed in the Annex A.

Application requirements

The WLTD programmes are open to both fresh and in-employment ITE graduates who are:

Singaporean Citizens or Permanent Residents; and have

A relevant Nitec with a Grade Point Average (GPA) score of at least 2.0; or

Quotes FROM Participating Companies

"Keppel O&M welcomes the introduction of the ITE Technical Diploma in Marine & Offshore Engineering. We have seen promising graduates join our ranks from the technical associate schemes that we currently partner ITE on, and we are pleased to participate in this new course by providing on-the-job training and mentorship. I am sure that this new programme will attract more students to build their careers with our industry.”

Dr Lee Chay Hoon, Director (Organisation Development & Human Resources), Keppel Offshore & Marine

“The Technical Diploma in Rehabilitation Care equips graduates with an added edge as we face an aging population where demand is high for community rehabilitative care.

In addition to having a competitive edge over their peers, they are better equipped to care for their loved ones too. This enables us to take a step towards building a stronger community of care.

Through our collaboration, our students take on internship programmeswhere they learn with first-hand experience in the field.”

Dr Kenny Tan, Chief Executive Officer, St Luke’s ElderCare

“The Work-Learn Technical Diploma Programme (Rehabilitation Care) not only provides opportunities for our employees in the support care role to advance their career within the organisation, it also provides regular intervals of On-the-Job training for them to apply what they have learnt in class (new ideas or knowledge) in their work, with guidance from their supervisors at work.

As part of the employee’s professional developments, AWWA plans to support five employees who have the potential to take on greater responsibilities and are motivated to upgrade themselves to attend the ‘Technical Diploma in Rehabilitation Care’.”

Ms Nuryasmin Hannah, HR Director, AWWA

QUOTES From ITE FRESH Graduates

“I think the new Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Security System Engineering has two clear advantages. One, we can earn an income while learning deeper skills. For those of us who need to supplement our family’s income, we can work while studying and that is very beneficial. Two, the new course will cover the aspect of physical security systems like cameras, cables and access control devices. The current polytechnic courses do not cover this area. I will seriously consider taking up this Technical Diploma after I complete my Diploma in Information Technology. This way, I will be skilled in both the physical and IT aspects of security systems.”

Wong Peng Chao Sherman, Diploma in Information Technology student at Singapore Polytechnic. Sherman recently graduated from the Higher Nitec in Security Systems Integration course at ITE.

“I think employers value work experience over academic knowledge. Through the new Work-Learn Diploma Programme, we can gain work experience while deepening our skills. It’s a win-win situation. The mode of learning on the job may be more suitable for me too. I am currently enjoying my work, but this is something I could consider in future.”

Muhammad Mirza Bin Fatah is now working as a technician with Synergy FM International. The company offered him the full-time position after his industry attachment with them. Mirza graduated with a Higher Nitec in Facility Management earlier this year. He started work in Mar 2017, soon after graduation.

“Since I heard about the new Technical Diploma course earlier this year, I have been waiting to enrol in it. I have benefited from the ITE style of learning, where we learn through hands-on experience and the lecturers are always approachable. I want to continue deepening my skills with ITE.”

Nur Fitri Binte Sulaiman completed the Nitec in Aerospace Avionics course in Mar 2015 before taking up the Higher Nitec in Marine Engineering course in Apr 2015. She has a scholarship with SembCorp Marine (SCM) and started work at the SCM Admiralty Yard after her Higher Nitec course in Apr 2017.

"I look forward to joining the Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Rehabilitation Care, because it is an excellent opportunity for me to deepen my skills in occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Through this course, I want to contribute even more at work and share my skills with my colleagues."

Samantha Koh, Community Care Assistant, St Hilda's Community Services Centre. Samantha graduated from ITE's Nitec in Community Care & Social Services course in Mar 2017.
