TEAM SINGAPORE SETS NEW RECORDS AT WORLDSKILLS 2022 SPECIAL EDITION

Team of 29 youths brings home Singapore’s highest-ever haul of Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals, with first medals in several skill areas

Team Singapore has achieved new firsts for Singapore, at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition (WSC2022SE) held from September to November this year. The team set the following records for the nation:

• Singapore’s and the world’s first Gold Medal in Additive Manufacturing (newly introduced this year)
• Singapore’s first Gold Medal in Hotel Reception
• Singapore’s first Gold Medal in Water Technology
• Singapore's first Medal in Aircraft Maintenance
• Singapore's first Medal in Chemical Laboratory Technology
• Singapore’s first Medal in Cloud Computing
  

Team Singapore’s overall medal haul in the global skills competition includes three Gold Medals, three Silver Medals, two Bronze Medals, and 13 Medallions for Excellence. This is the highest medal (Gold, Silver and Bronze) haul by Team Singapore to date. Their combined effort helped Singapore place 9^th out of 55 competing countries.

Team Singapore comprised 29 highly skilled youths from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and the five polytechnics¹. Many of them had been Gold medallists from WorldSkills Singapore (WSS) 2020 and WSS 2021 competitions. The list of Team Singapore competitors is in Annex B.

Following the cancellation of WorldSkills Shanghai 2022 due to the pandemic, this year’s WorldSkills competition was held in 15 countries, each hosting a different set of skill competitions. The competition was renamed WorldSkills 2022 Special Edition and featured over 1,000 competitors from 55 member countries.

Team Singapore participated in skills areas held in nine member countries and competed in 26 skills areas, which included four new areas – (1) Additive Manufacturing, (2) Digital Construction, (3) Mobile Applications Development and (4) Robot Systems Integration. Please refer to Annex C for more information on Singapore’s participation in the past WSCs.
