While most people tend to slow down in their 60’s, Dr Kwong Yuk Wah remains a trailblazer, looking to the future and shaping Singapore’s adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethically and responsibly.
With over 40 years of experience in the tech industry, Dr Kwong has dedicated herself to ensuring that technological advancement serves humanity positively.
Her journey reflects a deep commitment to responsible innovation, one that places ethics and human welfare at the heart of technological progress.
Pioneering Ethical AI Education
Through her work with Singapore Computer Society, Dr Kwong has introduced an AI Literacy Programme on Human Centricity across Polytechnics and ITEs, training 35,000 youths annually on how AI can be leveraged positively. Her impact extends far beyond the numbers, as she shapes an entire generation to think critically about technology's role in society.
This culminated in launching the world’s first AI Ethics Body of Knowledge and Certification programme, a notable achievement that was incorporated into and transformed the curriculum of Polytechnics and Institute of Technological Education (ITEs) across Singapore for industry-recognised certification.
When it comes to overcoming fear of technological change, Dr Kwong offers practical wisdom, "Though technology is changing quite rapidly, there are many learning resources for us to learn. But, when learning anything new, be it technology or otherwise, the fear is the first step. Once we overcome this mindset issue, we could enjoy the fun and benefits. So, don't think too much! Just do it!"
Beyond Innovation: A Mission to Give Back
For Dr Kwong, digital transformation extends far beyond efficiency and innovation. It represents an opportunity to give back to society. As Vice-President for Digital Transformation and Chief Digital Officer at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), she champions digital initiatives within and beyond the university walls, equipping individuals and communities with mindset and skills for the ever-evolving digital future.
She continues to teach students at the postgraduate level and adult learners through Continuing Education & Training programmes, covering tech and AI ethics modules. Her approach to teaching reflects a people-first philosophy that recognises each learner's unique journey. "Different age groups have different career aspirations and learning needs. I relate my experience to their specific aspirations and needs," she shares.
The Power of Continuous Learning
Despite her extensive achievements, Dr Kwong remains committed to personal growth and upskilling in the ever-changing AI landscape. Reflecting on her learning philosophy, "Learning a new skill can help me to discover my hidden talent and prepare me to seek new opportunities that could be a new job role or a new hobby.”
For her students, her message is clear and empowering, "Don't self-doubt. Know your passion and keep learning. Opportunities are for those who are well prepared.” This mindset exemplifies that age should never be a barrier to learning.
