SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector (General)

What is the SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector?

The SkillsFuture Study Award for the Power Sector aims to nurture a strong Singapore core of Power sector workforce equipped with relevant engineering skillsets. First announced in Budget 2015, it is one of the initiatives under the national SkillsFuture movement. It encourages Singaporeans to take ownership of their own skills upgrading and to deepen engineering skills in areas needed by future economic growth sectors.

What will I receive under the SkillsFuture Study Award? What can I use it for?

You will receive a monetary award of $5,000 which you can use to defray your out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course that you will be taking. It can be used on top of existing Government course fee subsidies. The award is bond-free.

Who can apply for the SkillsFuture Study Award for Power Sector?

Early to mid-career Singaporeans (i) with at least two years of engineering work experience in the Power sector (Electricity and Gas) or related sectors; or (ii) is a Licensed Electrical Worker / Licensed Gas Service Worker / Licensed Cable Detection Worker; or (iii) with at least two years of relevant Power Engineering skillsets in other sectors, may apply for this Award to support them in deepening their engineering skills in the Power sector/related sector.

What are the companies in the Power sector/ related sectors? Can I apply if I am in a Power-related sector?

You can see examples of companies in the Power sector at https://www.poweringlives.sg/industrypartners. Related sectors include the Clean Energy, Energy Efficiency and Oil & Gas industries.

Applicants with relevant Power Engineering skill sets from other sectors (e.g. maritime / transport) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

I am currently not employed but had previously worked in the Power sector for at least two years. Am I eligible to apply? Do I need to submit a testimonial / referral letter from either my past employer or the Union of Power & Gas Employees to support my application?

If you are currently in between jobs, you may approach your past employer or the Union of Power and Gas Employees for a referral letter.

How do I find out more about the courses?

You can approach the respective institutes of higher learning/ training providers for more information on the courses. A list of the supported courses can be found at www.skillsfuture.sg/studyawards/power.

Is the list of supported courses exhaustive?

No. If you are taking a course that is not found in the list published at www.skillsfuture.sg/studyawards/power, your application will be assessed by EMA, on a case-by-case basis.

How can I apply?

Applicants can download the application form from and submit it via the Study Awards website at www.skillsfuture.sg/studyawards/power. Application is open all year round.

What other required supporting documents do I have to provide?

Once you have submitted the application form online, please email the following supporting documents separately to enquiries@poweringlives.sg:

  1. Scanned copy of IC in colour (front and back);

  2. Testimonial or referral letter from past/current employer or the Union of Power

    And Gas Sector Employees, which states how the selected course(s) can help to deepen engineering skills related to the Power or related sector / Power Engineering skills (for those working in other sectors);

  3. Course curriculum / outline on selected course of study (if any); and

  4. Scanned copy of Letter of Offer/ Matriculation from the institute (if any).

To ensure that your attachments are correctly linked to your online application, do indicate within the subject line the following:

  • Application number (e.g. EMA-201XXXXX-XXXXXXXXX);

  • Full name and NRIC of applicant.

How long is the application process? How soon will I be informed of the outcome of my application?

You will be informed if your application is successful in about eight (8) weeks after submitting your application.

My company is sponsoring my course fees and other out-of-pocket expenses related to the course. Can I still apply for the SkillsFuture Study Awards?

If it is a full sponsorship, you will not be eligible for the SkillsFuture Study Award for the Power sector. However, if it is a partial sponsorship, you will be eligible to apply for the SkillsFuture Study Award.

Will submitting my application for the SkillsFuture Study Awards also mean I will concurrently be registered for the course of study?

No. This application is solely for the SkillsFuture Study Awards. Applicants will need to apply directly with the course provider for the course. You can check with your course provider for details on the registration process.

Can I postpone the completion of my course to a later date?

Requests to postpone the course completion date will be reviewed by EMA on a caseby-case basis, after recipient has attained the approval for extension from the institute of higher learning/training provider. You will be required to submit your request in writing to EMA at enquiries@poweringlives.sg.

How will the Study Awards’ monies be disbursed?

The full sum of S$5,000 will be disbursed after the award recipient completes at least 50 per cent of the course. Supporting documents such as certification letter and/or transcripts from the institutes of higher learning/ training provider must be submitted to EMA to certify that the recipient is still undergoing, or has completed, the course.
